Performing Arts Update 8/21- 8/27
Congratulations to our students on completing our band and colorguard camp this past week! Thank you to everybody who donated supplies, volunteered for uniform fitting, and adjusted their schedules to make the camp possible!
I am working on importing emails that were listed on the contact forms, and am hoping to have updated/ additional email addresses ready for next week. After that, please let me know if you are missing the email from your preferred address and I'll figure out what happened and get it fixed.
There is a lot going on, but it doesn't all apply to every student so please read this week's update carefully!
Instrument/ Flag Morning Dropoff & Afternoon Pickup
All of our students will need their flag or instrument every day for class. When students arrive in the morning, they will enter the room through the locker room door and put their instrument in the assigned locker, or flag in the assigned slot in the band room located by the chairs (number on the flag matches the number on the holder).
Once students have dropped off their items, they must exit the room immediately. Having somewhere to store our instruments throughout the day is a privilege, and it is important that we are not abusing it by remaining in the room while there is no supervision available.
After school, students will need to return to the band room to retrieve their instrument or equipment before proceeding out the gate to go home. All equipment and instruments need to be taken home every night, unless students talk with myself or Hector regarding a special circumstance for that day that prevents them from doing so.

We are having our makeup uniform fitting for all BAND students who were unable to attend our uniform fitting day last week on Friday, August 26th from 1:30- 3:30PM. Students should plan for the full two hours as we work our way through each article of the uniform as a group.
If you do not have a uniform already from our original fitting, you MUST ATTEND!! There is no makeup to the makeup ;)
If you're able to volunteer to help out on this day, please let me know, it would be much appreciated!!!
8th Grade Band OPTIONAL Performances for BTSN & Artesia DES Festa
We are looking to have a group of 8th grade band students who were in advanced band last year perform at our Tetzlaff Back to School Night on Wednesday September 7th, and the Artesia DES Festa on Sunday September 25th. These performances will be optional, but I am hoping we can have most of our 8th grade team will participate as we learn some new music and bring back a tune for these events.
To prepare for the performances, this group will have 3 rehearsals after school leading up to the BTSN night on the 7th, and a final rehearsal before the Artesia DES performance. The rehearsal schedule will be:
Wednesday 8/24, practice 2:40- 4:00PM
Wednesday 8/31, practice 2:40- 4:00PM
Friday 9/2, practice 1:30- 3:00PM (mini party afterwards from 3:00- 3:30 if interested!)
Wednesday 9/7- BTSN Performance (call time TBD in the late afternoon/ early evening)
Friday 9/23, practice 1:30- 3:00PM
Sunday 9/25, Artesia DES Performance (Call time TBD in the afternoon)
I will check in with students tomorrow to find out who can make it. Depending on the number of 8th grade students interested/ available, it could be possible that a few 7th graders are asked to play on an invitation basis based on instrumentation, reading ability, and musicianship. Those students would be invited Monday afternoon or Tuesday during class.
Important Parent Meeting, Tuesday August 30th from 6-7PM @ Tetzlaff
We will be having the first of 4 quarterly parent meetings this year from 6-7PM in the band room at Tetzlaff. These meetings are extremely important and we will go over a large agenda in a quite limited amount of time. At the first meeting we will cover:
- Parade Day Overview (what to expect, volunteer needs, etc)
- Competition team expectations/ how to help your student succeed
- Supply Donation Needs
- Upcoming Volunteer Needs (uniform alteration day!)
- Calendar Overview
While the meeting is designed for parents, students are able to attend if it allows you to make it! I will have Starbucks to help everybody get through the hour, and promise to have you out no later than 7PM on the dot! To make sure we can get to everything, please do your best to arrive a few minutes early so we can start right on time!
See you there!!
Angels Game National Anthem Performance
This year our students will have the opportunity to play the National Anthem at an Angels game on Wednesday, September 28th as part of the Angels Band Night!! I am confirming this week, but I believe colorguard will also be able to go on the field with their flag and hold it at a lowered position should they choose to attend (schools did this last year).
This performance is an optional performance for students interested, but is a lot of fun and highly recommended. Students who attend will need to purchase a ticket for themselves as well as a minimum of 2 additional tickets for $20 each for a total of 3 tickets for $60. This is a minimum requirement from the Angels for participation, however you can purchase tickets for as many people as you would like to have attend! Tickets will be grouped together by family.
There is no bus for the event and families will meet at Angels Stadium near the center field parking lot for a combined rehearsal with the other schools participating about 1-2 hours prior to the game.
If money is really tight right now and this wouldn't be possible right now, please contact me privately once order forms go out and we'll work to make sure your student still gets this experience.
Mandatory Rehearsals for students playing the National Anthem:
We will be having 3 mandatory band rehearsals for students play the National Anthem in addition to student practice time at home to ensure students are proficient and ready to play. These will be:
Friday 9/9, 1:30- 3:00PM
Friday 9/16 1:30- 3:00PM
Wednesday 9/21 1:30- 3:00PM
Students who have a conflict with one of these dates but still wish to attend the performance need to contact me as soon as possible. It may not be possible to work around the conflict, but we will try.
Order forms for the game will go out next week in the email to give families enough time to determine if their student is able to participate.
Band & Colorguard T-shirts
T-shirt order is going out tomorrow after practice, so it will be the official last chance to order a shirt. I will be ordering extras if anybody needs one after that point, but it will be on a first come, first serve basis once pre-orders have been passed out.
